  18. <p>     When word spread last June that Atlanta surgeon William
  19. Logan Jr. and pathologist Kenneth Alonso had found a promising
  20. new treatment for AIDS patients, hopes soared, lights flashed,
  21. and a media circus rolled into town. TV cameras descended on
  22. the operating room to record the miraculous recovery of a
  23. patient with AIDS-related Kaposi's sarcoma, whom the doctors
  24. had treated by heating his blood to kill the AIDS virus.
  25. </p>
  26. <p>     Last week the hope came crashing to the ground. After
  27. studying the cases, federal investigators declared the
  28. treatment useless and recommended against further human
  29. experimentation. They attributed one patient's remarkable
  30. recovery to misdiagnosis: he did not have Kaposi's sarcoma to
  31. begin with. Dr. Alonso called the report "absurd," and plans to
  32. continue his study, possibly in Latin America or Europe.
